Australian Dating Sites - Free or Paid?

Australian Dating Sites - Free or Paid? H ow to choose your online dating site. Free online dating advice, online dating tips, online dating strategies. eDateMate Australia

It is possible to attract dates no matter which site you decide to join, however a dating site is only as good as your matches on it. Whether you're wanting a serious relationship or something more casual, knowing which dating site is right for you comes down to knowing what experience you are after. Let me explain...

Some sites are free (e.g. OasisActive), some are paid subscription (e.g. eHarmony) and others are somewhere in between (e.g. RSVP).  Generally speaking sites that cost money attract singles who are more serious about dating (they have paid for a subscription after all), however higher joining fees doesn't necessarily mean better quality of matches.

What Do I Need To Know?

Try a free site and a paid site

Each experience is going to be different - it's kind of like being in two different bars at the same time.

Limit yourself to a few sites at any one time

This will allow you to focus your time and energy on those select sites, rather than juggling too many sites and matches at any one time.

Do your homework

As annoying as it can be, read the small print to avoid getting caught out with hidden terms and conditions.

Try before you buy

Try the dating site for a month or so before committing yourself to a long-term paid subscription (usually 3 to 12 months).

Opt out of 'auto renew' subscriptions

A common complaint of one particular dating site, make sure you opt-out of the 'auto renew' subscription to avoid being inadvertently charged for a dating site you no longer use. Unless you die or can produce a medical certificate of "incapacity to online date", it is virtually impossible to obtain a refund!

Independence or Matchmaker?

There are two main site strategies; those that give you independence (e.g. RSVP) and those that play matchmaker (e.g. eHarmony). There are pros and cons to both approaches and everyone has different experiences - good and bad. If for example, you like the idea of a 'compatibility matching system' delivering select matches to your inbox, you might prefer this targeted strategy. You may however prefer to be the master of your own destiny where you can view all members and be only restricted by your own search parameters. What Are The Popular Australian Dating Sites?

Online dating has well and truly hit the main stream with over half of Australian singles having tried or would consider it a viable matchmaking option. RSVP, Australia’s largest singles site, has over two million members with 1,200 new members joining every day. eHarmony, Australia’s second largest site has over one million members and they attribute almost 11,000 marriages to an eHarmony match. Other popular sites includes OasisActive, OKCupid, Plenty of Fish and Tinder.  You can also read a review of the popular sites by Choice, a leading Australian consumer advocacy group.

Whatever site you choose,  keep in mind the popular sites will have a larger pool of members to choose from. The list of dating sites in Australia is ever growing, but we have a long way to go compared to overseas. In the US alone there are a staggering 1500 dating sites! So many choices...too many choices? There are niche markets that focus on interests or attributes such as ethnicity, religion or hobbies. There is something for everyone, including a site just for 'gluten free singles'!

What about Tinder?

Tinder is a modern day 'Hot' or 'Not'. It is a free app, links to your Facebook profile and suggests matches based on your location.  It’s basically the straight version of Grindr.  You swipe through a smorgasbord of faces and click ‘like’ or 'pass' and if someone likes you back you start chatting. Tinder is instant and doesn't take much work compared to other dating sites.  Decisions are based purely on looks compared to conventional dating sites which require well thought out messages and profiles to accurately portray their best selves. The Bottom Line:

Each site has its own pros and cons which are important to weigh up and consider.   There is no doubt, however, that on any dating site an individuals profile is the most important first step in attracting the right kind of matches.
