How To Write A Standout Online Dating Profile

August 5, 2014 Natalie Jane
how to write a standout online dating profile for free and paid Australia dating sites, online dating advice, online dating tips, online dating strategies

To get noticed in the world of online dating you basically need to ace your profile ... unless of course you're incredibly good looking - then it doesn't matter what you write! But for the rest of us, your profile needs to read fun, flirty and confident without sounding like you are trying too hard. There is a fine line my friend.  For example, you're better off copping to a humanising flaw than coming across as too good to be true.

Let’s be clear - online dating is a different medium with a different set of rules - and for a successful online dating experience you need to know how to win. Everybody has something fascinating to say about themselves, yet somehow 90 percent of dating profiles read nearly identical. If you're hoping to connect with your ideal match, want your profile to standout, demand people's attention and encourage matches to message you, then make sure you get absolute mileage out of every single word you write.

So let’s get you started with the fundamentals of crafting a standout profile:

Be Real

Write like you talk, like you are having a conversation with a friend. Your profile will sound approachable and informal rather than like you are applying for a job.

Be Honest

Write about who you are, not who you wish you could be.

It can be tempting to over-exaggerate accomplishments in life or other parts of your life such as how much exercise you do. You may have some ‘flaw’ you don’t feel good about, or want to look as hot as possible to increase your options, and its tempting to post a misleading profile. You may rationalise that you aren't THAT different.  You may reason that your match should like you for who you are not jut your age or weight for example. You may argue that you must make your profile more alluring than you are just to have a chance with meeting someone. I’m here to tell you DON’T DO IT

Relationships are based on a foundation of trust and unless you are happy living in cyber space indefinitely, your misrepresentations will no doubt come back to haunt you. Your match will recognise the deception when you meet and the odds that they’ll overlook the deception aren’t good. More likely, that will be the one and only date you get with them, wasting both your time.

Be Positive

People gravitate towards the light, so always keep it positive and avoid negative talk.

Write-ups that include humour are a great way to associate you with pleasurable feeling when reading your profile. For example, self-depreciating humour will show you don’t take yourself too seriously.  The important thing however is to know how to use the RIGHT type of humor, which should be witty, playful or funny. Don’t go overboard – any more than a funny comment or two comes off as trying to hard.

Be Unique

“I love to travel and looking for my partner in crime to explore the world with"

So who doesn't love to travel?

Avoid overused phrases and personal add cliché’s like ‘looking for love’ – you want to be original not like everyone else. Show you are different by injecting your personality and sense of style into your profile write-up.  By trying to appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one. Identify those things that matter most to you, not a broad list of things in the hope it will appeal to more matches.

Be Specific

Getting specific not only makes you sound more interesting, it gives the reader a better idea of who you really are, which increases your chances of meeting your match.

It doesn’t have to be about an African safari or jumping off a cliff in Bali to be entertaining, but you should have something that is unique to you and makes you interesting. People act on a dating profile when they can see themselves as part of your story. So get specific and descriptive about the things you love and avoid a long list of over-used-generic words such as "I’m kind and funny".
